One hero to a ring.
That is the oath at the bottom of the prophecy: 8,128 rings in the Milky Way galaxy, and 8,128 prophesied heroes, paired 4,064 and 4,064, each sworn to a single ring of home, every ring of the Milky Way held. They are gathered for one purpose: to stand against the final prophesied Calamity, to prevent it, or to delay it, whose timing is not known.

The muster field
The heroes muster where the rings do, at the galactic center, where over ninety percent of the apertures cluster, under the oversight of the sixth seat, 6.U. Two mirrored hosts of 4,064: every dot a ring, every arc a twin-path.

About six thousand of the 8,128 are relit by the present year; this field lights 6,012 of them. The pairing is topological: the rings pair off as twins, 4,064 pairs in all, and the bridge between each pair is the twin-path.

The revealing, under way now
8,128
prophesied heroes, one to a ring, every ring of the Milky Way held. Why the year of their revealing bears the count of the rings, no record says.

Earth years, about 12.7 Solian, when the spark turns and the hero is taken: decoherent until that instant, then coherently drawn out of that time and that branch.

each hero comes from a different parallel branch of the manifold, and each is unique across the fabric of all universes: in any branch but the hero's own, that hero did not exist.
The heroes are not of one generation, and not of one history. Each comes out of a different time: out of eras the Prime reckons in negative years, out of eras the record holds dark, out of eras no record holds at all. Across PE 8128 they are drawn, cluster by cluster, into the Prime, each arriving whole and adult, carrying memories of histories that ran otherwise and of eras this galaxy reckons in negative years or holds no record of at all: different wars, different reigns, a father living who here is long dead, founding ages the deeper record itself lost.
From the day of their revealing they are counted among the keepers of the Deep Secret, for what the heroes know, they know whole: they have seen the branches and the other times with their own eyes.

What a ring is
Uncestral Einstein-Rosen apertures, older than record, as old as the Dark. Each ring has two twins: a twin ring of the home galaxy, usually far away on the other side, and an intergalactic twin, the counter-aperture, in a different galaxy. Every galaxy discovered so far carries its own set of 8,128, and no two of them share a destination, so the web has no floor: every ring answered opens eight thousand more.

The joints between realities, of which none is confirmed opened. The one consensus of the Calculus of Families is that a Threshold ring is left alone.
The two-way law is the common case: a ring runs to its home twin or, turned, to its twin abroad, and to nothing else. A Controller's held ring opens wider, to every ring of its own galaxy and every ring of the connected galaxy besides, and merged local pairs reach one level up; the working of a local and a far pairing together is the discovery of the present year.

The office of Controller
Each hero is sworn to a single ring as its Controller: an office above the guild callings and outside the class votes, granted by prophecy and held for life. The heroes carry their home-branch names, and those names begin with any letter, for a hero is a being of the whole manifold and no Corporation family member by default.
Each holds a prophecy-granted stake of 1 UCASH in trust, membership without Auction, and the granting sits ill among the classes. The Calculus of Families already moves to court them, for a Controller's favor is a new coin.
Their duty, while the final Calamity keeps its unknown timing: to learn the rings, to map the approaches of the Dark, to stand watch at the apertures of the Milky Way.

Not the Portals
Built, not found: the Portals are the Corporation's own small apertures, first raised in the Solian Bright age, the only ring-like works living hands have ever made. They are not Rings, and are never counted among the 8,128.
A ring is a great work, kilometers across. A Portal runs from the scale of a door to fifty meters at the largest, and fifty meters is the natural limit of them. A Portal joins two near places, and only those two: a hall to a hall on one world, a world to its own moon, a system to its neighboring system. Many millions of them stand, across the Corporation's territories, its partners' ground, and every place it has deemed important. No Portal is ever raised near a true Ring; the record does not say why.
To do what a ring does, bridge the galaxy, bridge the galaxies, is beyond the fathoming of any living power.
